Maria & Pepe are back for Summer 2025! From July 9 to August 2, join is on the sunny terrace of cultural and ecological hub OASE. This time, there is far more than delicious plant-based dishes inspired by the buzzing streets of Mexico.
People and stories take center stage alongside the food, with daily programming made to spark connections between us, our guests, and people in the community. Salsa parties, storytelling nights, tortilla-making workshops, guest cooks with dishes from around the globe await!
A simple thought guides this year’s concept: when we take time to get to know one another—whether neighbor or stranger—we open the door to empathy and understanding. Through the languages of dance, music, food, and storytelling, Maria & Pepe invites you to join a journey toward a more connected, peaceful society.
Here’s more good news: Maria & Pepe is becoming a stichting! With a big desire to deepen and amplify the project further, this is an exciting step that will help us get there. Stay tuned for more on this!
Ahí nos vemos,
Maria & Pepe

Maria & Pepe opens its doors from Wednesdays to Saturdays at 17:00 (at 9:00 on Saturdays!) for food and drinks. This year, our menu is inspired by the buzzing streets of Mexico. People, colors, dogs, music create a spectacle every day on the street…it’s nothing less than their stage.
Our menu represents the stories that unwind beyond the walls of a home, all while creating a home from the street itself.
Rotterdam is a bit like a Mexican fruit bowl; there’s a bit of everything. People new to the city, people who’ve never left, people who are here temporarily, and some who lie somewhere in between.
Starting at 19h on Wednesday evenings, a special dish will appear on our menu made by someone new to the city. We’ll start with a story about the dish to get us into the mood, and let the night connect us with new people and exchange stories. about home, may it be found far away, in many places, or nowhere at all.

Stories are within and all around us. While all are different, relating to them in some way or another is quite inevitable. Even when they seem far, they’re closer than we think. Every Thursday night, a theme will gather four stories from tellers. Stories about love, heartbreak, grief, embarrassment, birth, death, and much more will bind us closer together, and show us things in a new light. Maybe we’ll laugh, maybe we’ll cry…it’ll be great.
*Note: To create the best experience, food and drinks will only be available before and after the event – not during the stories!
Free Entrance! No sign-up needed, just show up (on time!)

Dancing is joy. Every Friday night, salsa and bachata are making our spirits laugh and bodies boom to the irresistible sounds of the drums, trumpets, and the moonlight looking from above.
Are you a beginner? Amazing! A quick workshop before the evening will show you easy, basic steps you can use for the rest of the night. Then, we’ll keep going strong until 2am! Come with friends or alone – you’re sure to have a good time.

In Mexico, we wake up salty. It’s the law, ok? Sets us up nice and spicy for the rest of the day. Every Saturday morning, a Mexican breakfast menu will set you up nice and spicy for the rest of the day. Glide out of bed and onto our terrace!

Mexican Kitchen Workshops will take place every Saturday! More details will come soon 🙂
Maria is Mexican. In her youth, she spent her days buying papas con chile, limon y sal (chips with hot sauce, lime and salt) and mango from street vendors in Mexico City. Among the things that lift her up are the sound of trumpets and drums, as well as working towards a world where all living beings – humans and non-humans – are cared for and respected.
Pepe’s real name is Joost. In Mexico, Pepe is a nickname for those called José – which translates to Joost in Dutch. Maria’s father named him Pepe at the start of their relationship. Pepe is an ecopreneur and avid tree-lover in search of a joyful, peaceful way of living on this Earth. Time is precious for Pepe. For him, every second is a golden opportunity to make a positive impact within yourself and the world.
Maria and Pepe met by chance on a hot summer day in a park in Rotterdam and have been together ever since… This love story is a good one; if you ask for it, we’ll be happy to share it with you at the restaurant. They created a list of things they wanted to do together, and building a restaurant happened to be on it. But ‘restaurant’ is only scratching the surface of what they envision it to be.
Maria & Pepe – now a pop-up, perhaps a permanent project later – strives to show a side of Mexico that is not widely known. Our plant-based menu tells stories of its wonderful people, culture and history. It also represents part of the path they believe can help make the world kinder and better.
